Architectural History and Evolution

This unit surveys major architectural styles, materials, and structural innovations from Byzantine and medieval Europe through modern, postmodern, and key non‑Western traditions (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Islamic/Mughal). Students will study how cultural context, technological advances, and material systems shaped form and construction and will begin applying that knowledge to inform drafting and design choices in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze defining characteristics, forms, and cultural contexts of major architectural movements from Byzantine and Romanesque through contemporary and postmodern styles.
• Compare material and structural systems—masonry, timber, iron/steel framing, and reinforced concrete—and explain how innovations altered building scale, form, and construction methods.
• Evaluate key principles and spatial strategies of non‑Western traditions (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Islamic/Mughal) and distinguish their influences on regional architecture.
• Apply historical and stylistic knowledge to make informed drafting decisions by selecting appropriate stylistic elements, materials, and structural approaches for conceptual sketches and annotated drawings.
