Classical to Medieval Transformations

This unit examines major religious, political, military, and cultural developments from classical India, Greece, and Rome through medieval Europe and the Islamic world. Students investigate beliefs, institutions, warfare, law, and infrastructure to understand patterns of continuity and change and to prepare instructional materials for classroom use in the Teaching as a Profession pathway.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze primary and secondary sources to identify core beliefs and historical impacts of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam, citing specific textual or archaeological evidence
• Evaluate political institutions, legal developments, and military strategies of classical Greece and Rome alongside medieval European systems (e.g., Norman Conquest, Magna Carta, First Crusade) to explain continuity and change across centuries
• Analyze the roles of technological and infrastructural innovations (bridges, fortifications, roads) and socio-economic practices (farming, urbanization) in shaping cultural exchange and state formation during the classical and medieval eras
• Demonstrate the ability to design a FE23-aligned lesson segment or formative assessment that teaches a key unit concept (religion, government, or warfare), including clear objectives, primary-source use, and differentiated strategies
