Targeted ACT Skills & Strategies

This unit develops targeted, test-ready skills across ACT Reading, English, Math, and Writing by combining content review (key math topics, punctuation, grammar) with test-taking strategies (passage classification, question identification, essay thesis construction, scoring expectations, and accommodations). It builds on foundational orientation work and prepares students for timed practice and full-length exam simulations in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze ACT Reading passages to classify passage formats, identify question types, and apply timed strategies to locate evidence and answer inference, main-idea, and detail questions accurately
• Demonstrate mastery of essential ACT Math content—fractions/decimals/percents, basic operations, angles, triangles, roots/radicals, and introductory complex numbers—and apply problem-solving approaches to solve ACT-style problems under time constraints
• Apply English grammar and punctuation rules to edit and improve sentences and passages for clarity, correctness, and concision, increasing accuracy on English test items
• Evaluate ACT writing prompts, develop clear thesis statements, construct organized essays, and use official scoring criteria to self-assess and revise responses while accounting for accommodations and state-specific test differences
