Applied Theory and Score Practices

This capstone unit integrates advanced rhythmic notation, harmonic processes, scoring formats, and historical context to prepare students for real-world music analysis and performance. Students will practice transposition, modulation, cadence construction, and score reading (piano, vocal, short score, and tablature) while connecting theory to 20th–21st century composers, technologies, and social movements.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and accurately notate complex rhythms, dotted values, ties, and compound intervals and apply those notations within mixed-meter and multi-voice examples.
• Apply transposition and modulation techniques to move pieces between keys and transcribe excerpts for piano, vocal, short score, and tablature formats.
• Demonstrate harmonic understanding by constructing cadences and common chord progressions using figured bass and the Nashville Number System and employ these tools to support memorization and improvisation.
• Evaluate the influence of selected composers, instrument innovations, and sociohistorical movements (e.g., Stravinsky, Schoenberg, Partch, Stockhausen, Moog, Nueva Canción, Civil Rights and Arab Spring contexts) on musical language, scoring practices, and contemporary arranging.
