Foundations of Home Recording

This unit introduces the core components, workflows, and practices needed to build and operate a basic home recording studio. Students will learn studio layout and signal flow, equipment selection and connections, microphone techniques, initial DAW/MIDI fundamentals, and the steps to capture a usable first take for later mixing and production.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze home studio requirements and produce a documented studio plan (signal-flow diagram, equipment list, and recommended room/placement considerations) for a given recording project.
• Demonstrate correct setup and operation of analog and digital connections and devices—microphones, preamps, mixers, audio interfaces, and synchronization methods (MIDI/word clock)—by wiring and testing a working signal chain.
• Apply microphone selection, placement, and gain-setting techniques to capture clean lead and backing vocal takes and basic instrument tracks, including close and distant miking and performing punching in/out.
• Evaluate basic DAW workflows and file-format trade-offs by completing a multitrack session that includes MIDI sequencing/loops, basic editing, and exporting deliverables in appropriate formats for mixing and distribution.
