Foundations of Resume Development

This unit introduces students to the purpose, parts, and formats of resumes and the role of digital presence in modern job searches. Students will learn to analyze resume formats, build ATS-friendly and plain-text versions, target content to employers, and manage online visibility to prepare for advanced job application tasks in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze differences among resume formats (reverse-chronological, functional, combination, creative, and plain-text) and justify format selection for specific industries, career stages, and special circumstances
• Apply keyword optimization, formatting strategies, and appropriate file types to create ATS-friendly and plain-text resumes that preserve key information across platforms
• Demonstrate the ability to develop a targeted resume by tailoring qualifications, accomplishments, and content for a given job posting, including handling employment gaps and creating creative marketing variants when appropriate
• Evaluate the impact of social networking and online search on hiring decisions and implement privacy, search, and distribution strategies when sending resumes or conducting job searches
