Intermediate Java: OOP, Collections, GUI

This unit develops intermediate Java skills building on foundational syntax and problem solving to cover object-oriented design, collections and generics, basic concurrency and functional constructs, and introductory JavaFX user interface and event handling. Students will work with the Java module system, date/time and BigDecimal APIs, and practice exception handling and class-level features to prepare for more advanced application development and project work in the final unit.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and design Java classes and interfaces using access control, constructors, this/super, method overloading, clone(), and class-level patterns (including preventing instantiation) to implement robust, reusable object models
• Apply collection and array concepts (including LinkedList, TreeMap, wildcard generics, array iteration, and StringBuilder) and perform precise data handling with Date-Time parsing/creation and BigDecimal arithmetic and rounding
• Demonstrate concurrent and functional techniques by creating and coordinating threads, passing parameters via lambda expressions, and using interface default/static methods and the Java Module System to structure code
• Evaluate and implement basic JavaFX user interfaces and event handling (importing packages, inner-class handlers, alerts, layout spacing, radio buttons, and combo boxes) and incorporate exception messages and control-flow constructs to produce user-facing applications
