This unit introduces integrated client- and server-side skills and tools for building, testing, and deploying web applications. Students will work with PHP and MySQL, browser debugging tools, HTML/CSS layout and accessibility, JavaScript fundamentals and asynchronous data fetching, form construction and validation, and basic hosting and security considerations to prepare for more advanced back-end and deployment work.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze web application behavior and troubleshoot errors using browser developer tools, console logging, PHP error logs, and debugging workflows
- Apply server-side programming and database techniques to create and manipulate MySQL databases and tables, perform CRUD operations with PHP, and manage phpMyAdmin
- Demonstrate front-end development skills by constructing accessible, responsive pages using HTML, CSS (including grid and fluid layouts), and client-side JavaScript features such as events, functions, arrays, web storage, and the Fetch API
- Evaluate deployment and security considerations by configuring a local development environment (e.g., XAMPP), preparing projects for hosting, validating form data on the server, and identifying common web vulnerabilities and mitigation strategies
