Sustainable Experiential Travel

This unit explores low-impact, educational, and community-centered travel experiences—from cycling and voluntourism to language schools, cultural workshops, and sustainable lodging and transport. Students learn to assess, select, and design travel choices that reduce environmental impact, support host communities, and deepen learning through hands-on travel experiences.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare experiential travel options (e.g., cycling tours, voluntourism, language schools, photography and cultural workshops, sports travel) using sustainability, ethical impact, cost, and learning outcome criteria
• Apply decision-making frameworks to select and justify appropriate voluntourism, educational, and activity-based travel opportunities that provide measurable community benefit and personal skill development
• Evaluate accommodations, transportation modes, and carbon-offset methods using measurable sustainability indicators to minimize environmental footprint and maximize local benefits
• Demonstrate regenerative travel practices by developing a 3-day travel itinerary that integrates public transport, sustainable lodging, community-focused activities, and a plan to reduce or offset emissions
