Spatial Analysis and GIS Integration

This unit advances applied spatial analysis skills, focusing on raster and vector techniques, network and hydrologic modeling, and map algebra. Students will access and integrate geospatial data via APIs, SQL, and cloud GIS, produce and interpret maps and models, and apply interoperability, metadata, and security best practices to support decision-making.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze raster and vector datasets using interpolation, raster overlay, map algebra, and distance/flow functions to produce reproducible spatial outputs that inform decisions
• Apply network and hydrologic analysis techniques (including one-way navigation, stream delineation, and circuitry modeling) and implement those analyses using GIS tools such as GRASS and MapInfo
• Demonstrate proficiency in acquiring, querying, and integrating geospatial data from APIs, web services, cloud/SaaS platforms, and open sources (e.g., Natural Earth, IPUMS NHGIS) and convert and document datasets with appropriate metadata
• Evaluate map layout, interactivity, and data governance choices by producing polished map products and interactive apps that follow interoperability, security, and best-practice standards
